Instructions

• This tool allows users to curate a data set by delimiting, deduplicating, sorting, upper/lowercasing, and filtering.
• Item sets can be lists of urls, email addresses, phone numbers, names, keywords, etc.
• These can be delimited by lines, commas, colons, semicolons, spaces, or tabs.
• Users only need to enter a data set and select its current delimiter. For example, you may select
  • [ lines ] if the data set is a list.
  • [ semicolons ] if the data set is delimited by semicolons.
  • [ spaces ] if the data set are terms separated by spaces, and so forth...
• Use its built-in trimmer to trim item sets starting or ending at a given input character. For instance,
  • Enter [ # ] in the start field of TRIM to remove hashtag text; e.g., blabla#mmm becomes blabla.
  • Enter [ # ] in the end field of TRIM to keep hashtag text; e.g., blabla#mmm becomes mmm.
  • Note: Normally you should use one field or the other. If you use both fields, the start field action is performed first.
• To export output, select it by clicking its textarea. Copy/paste as you usually would.
• To prevent abuses,
  • input sets cannot exceed a total of 100,000 characters.
  • strings to be matched/not matched cannot exceed a total of 300 characters.

Who can use it?

• Content/data curators, teachers, students, or anyone working with data sets.
• Users with a basic knowledge of data sets.

Suggested Exercises

• Submit a list of URLs from a Wikipedia article. Filter out those that match or don't match [wiki].
• Input the set {car,insurance,hot,jobs,car,insurance,cute,pets}. Enter one item at a time by pressing Enter from the keyboard.
  • Which delimiter is used in this case?
  • Remove [hot jobs] from this set by matching [hot] or [jobs].
  • Check what happens if you use other delimiters or matching strings.
• Repeat previous exercise for the set {car,insurance,hot,jobs,car,insurance,cute,pets}.
• Edit an arbitrary piece of text using different delimiters/options. Compare results.
• Edit a set of items obtained from a spreadsheet workbook or list.
  Notes: Items pasted from a workbook row or column into our tool input textarea become in each case tab- or line-delimited.
